Multi-Lingual Search - Overview

Mike Taylor

TECC Ltd.

This document presents an overview of a system composed of cleanly seperable parts which can be used for performing multi-lingual searches in which exact meanings may be blurred: for example, the search term ``chien'' can identify records about dogs, hounds, poodles, etc.

Introduction

This document provides an overview of a system for performing searches across bodies of documents in various languages, using search terms from a variety of languages. Search terms may find documents which contain their equivalents in other languages. This system is composed of cleanly seperable components which may be plugged together in various ways: specifically, interfaces may allow searching via the web or by WAP phones; and hierachies of search brokers may be constructed concealing the complexities of data provision from both the interface and higher-level brokers.
